Well, after covering for 5 weeks last term conducting the Muswell Hill Popchoir, after the summer hols I was asked to take up the role and be their ongoing conductor! I very happily said yes, and am loving the weekly rehearsals.
Kudos to these singers – they don’t have musical scores to look at, only the lyrics. So they learn their parts in two ways: by listening to learning tracks made by Popchoir founder Helen Hampton, and – if it’s new material – via the teaching and ‘note-bashing’ by yours truly at rehearsals. Clearly this approach works, because Popchoir has been up and running for a decade and a half, and they sing a fair few gigs each year, and all of it is ‘off copy’. Popchoir also raise loads of money for various charities, so BRAVI to Helen and ALL the Popchoristers.
Oh – and if you live in North London and fancy having a good old sing on a Wednesday night in Muswell Hill, come and join us! Send an email to me at info@rachelwestonsinger.com and I’ll put you in touch with Helen to arrange a ‘taster’ session.
