What a joy it is to sing concerts, to travel and perform, and to record in the studio. I’d always been grateful to do this work, but since the disruption during 2020/21 caused by the Covid pandemic, there’s been an extra layer of gratitude at play.
During that hiatus, I’d reflected on my professional life in music. As well as singing as a soloist and in vocal ensembles in many different parts of the world, I’ve sung on the soundtracks of hundreds of movies and the albums of dozens of artists. There’s been variety and diversity aplenty, that’s for sure. Yet it’s an oddly anonymous process – you give of your best on a big project, then quietly move on and do the next. So it did feel good to quantify and acknowledge the work done.
It felt MUCH BETTER though to get back on stage with colleagues in the autumn of 2021 – singing in Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, London’s Royal Festival Hall and the Paris Philharmonie. Real, in-person, onstage performances, with fabulous living, breathing audiences! Very moving. And a pretty amazing line-up of venues, too, for the restart!
